Food for the Hungry: Solstice Benefits Teams with Feeding South Florida

November 24, 2011

During the Thanksgiving season, Solstice employees actively assisted Feeding South Florida by collecting and donating over 200 pounds of food that went to more than 936,000 homeless and hungry families in Palm Beach, Broward, Miami Dade, and Monroe counties.

Feeding South Florida was founded in 1981 as the Daily Bread Food Bank, an organization dedicated to diminishing poverty in South Florida regions and counties. With the help of a variety of local companies, food processors, and farmers, Feeding South Florida has had the privilege of distributing nearly 2 million pounds of food every month to those in need. Last year, the company was recognized as the largest food bank in Florida, distributing well over 29 million pounds of food across the southern regions of the state.

Hunger is an alive and growing epidemic in the United States. Statistics show that nearly 49 million Americans are at risk of hunger, which translates to one in six Americans—primarily children and the elderly. The causes for this unfortunate situation are many, such as job loss and high living expenses. Not only are millions going hungry, but over 20 percent of all food produced in the United States goes to waste—food that could go to those in need.

Needless to say, Solstice recognizes the need to give back to the community. Carlos Ferrera, Chief Operating Officer at Solstice, said, “During this time of year, it is especially important to think about others who are less fortunate, help however we can, and recognize how blessed we are. That’s what this season is all about.”

Throughout November, Solstice employees collected and donated items such as canned meats, vegetables, rice, beans, fruits, and various other foods to Feeding South Florida. “We are very proud and honored to be a part of this great cause and to support those in our local community,” said Ferrera.
