Employees Come Together for the Fight Against Heart Disease

Heart disease claims the lives of more American women than all cancers combined.  Solstice, a local dental vision and life benefits provider, proves that they do not take heart disease lightly, and for the third consecutive year, participated in the American Heart Association’s, “National Wear Red Day.”

On Friday, Feb. 1, Solstice employees arrived at the office, proudly wearing red in support of the fight against heart disease. Wearing red served as an outward symbol of Solstice’s commitment to fight heart disease through raising community awareness and fundraising efforts.

In 2003, over 500,000 lives were lost due to heart disease, making it the No. 1 killer among females. With such eye-opening statistics, the American Heart Association (AHA), along with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute created “National Wear Red Day” to raise awareness of this critical issue. Each year on the first Friday in February, millions of women and men come together to wear red, take action and commit to fighting heart disease. One year later, the AHA also created Go Red For Women - a program designed to educate and spread awareness among women about the risks of heart disease and help women who suffer from the illness.

“As a company, we stand together to support the fight against heart disease.  Almost everyone is impacted in one way or another by heart disease; this is a cause we proudly stand behind. The American Heart Association works to save lives and our team is committed to taking part in that effort,”  said Solstice Chief Operating Officer, Carlos Ferrera. “It’s good to know that we [employees] can come to work every day and feel empowered and supported by one another. Walking through the office seeing everyone wearing red supporting this event was an incredible feeling.”

Since the first National Wear Red Day 10 years ago, the spread of heart disease awareness has made a large impact on American society. Over 21 percent fewer women have died from heart disease and 23 percent more women are aware that it’s their No. 1 health threat. Solstice aims to continue to spread awareness and support the American Heart Association by participation in future National Wear Red Days and at the upcoming Broward County Heart Walk on March 9, 2013 as the finish line sponsor.
